How to find yourself

The JD Letter

October 26, 2024

When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.” - Tao Te Ching

Before he became the Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama was like many of us. Someone who felt dissatisfaction and inner discontent. Someone who despite his privileges, felt that deep down he was meant for more.

Driven by this unshakable feeling, he left his privileged life to encounter suffering for the first time. But even after years of extreme self-denial, he realized that he was no closer to truth or peace.

Siddhartha became Buddha the moment he realized that true enlightenment and inner peace didn't come from external conditions or extremes.

Inner peace comes from cultivating your readiness by having a deep understanding of yourself.

To achieve our own transformation then, we need to deeply understand ourselves and ask: Am I ready? Not ready in the sense of adding more to your to-do list, but ready in the sense of exploring the truest form of your being.

The key to your transformation is in understanding yourself deeply.

Most people skip this step and wonder why they can't find their purpose in life.

The purpose of this letter is to help you dive deep into the rabbit hole within yourself. By solving the problem of not having a deep understanding of who you are, you solve all other problems in your life. It's a trickle down effect.

This will be a two part newsletter.

Here's what we're going to talk about:

Part 1

  • Tools to help you dive deep into your personality unique traits.
  • Insights into why certain thoughts and emotions dominate your inner dialogue.

Part 2 (coming out next week)

  • Building a life that feels right because it’s crafted with a clear understanding of who you truly are.

Let's face it. The truth is you can't know what you love if you don't understand who you are. You can't find your purpose if you don't raise your level of consciousness.

Buckle up. Let's dive deep.

Connect with your true self

“To know yourself, you must sacrifice the illusion that you already do.” – Vironika Tugalev

I want you to picture this.

The year is 2074.

You’re in your late 70’s early 80's.

You’re at home with your family and after the family dinner party your first grandchild who is now 18 comes to you asking for your guidance.

They want to know how to find purpose in life. They heard from everyone in the family that you are the embodiment of knowing your purpose and following your dreams.

What story are you telling them?

Let me help with that.

You will tell your grandchild that you always knew that deep down there was something greater than yourself that you were destined to do. And that despite society's norms and expectations, you made the decision of fully exploring your curiosity and your gifts.

You did so by finding out who you are at your core. In this process you found out what you're good at, what drives you, what motivates you, and what your weaknesses are. And you leveraged your strengths while continuously worked on improving your weaknesses.

And then you tell your grandchild:

"Here. These are the exact steps I took that helped me get a deeper understanding of myself. I call it the 30 minute narrative shift:"

  1. Do a free personality test here
  2. What is your personality type?
  3. What are your strengths? (leverage them)
  4. What are your weaknesses? (be aware of them and work to improve them)
  5. Which celebrities share your personality type?
  6. How can you follow a similar path to create your own version of success?

And then you look at your grandchild and say:

By following these 6 steps, worst case scenario you waste 30 minutes of your day. Best case scenario, you change the entire trajectory of your life.

Raise your level of consciousness

Humans are like onions.

Each layer of the onion represents different aspects of our identity that we've accumulated over time.

The more you peel each layer, the closer you get to your core and find the deeper truths about yourself.

Full disclaimer: This process will bring tears. It will bring discomfort.

But it will also bring many moments of clarity and excitement .

With each layer you peel, the closer you get to understanding your true authentic self.

The most effective way I've found to recognize my level of consciousness is by using the scale from The Map of Consciousness by David R. Hawkins.

The Map of Consciousness is a scale that measures the vibrational frequency of human consciousness. It ranges from shame (lowest) to enlightenment (highest). Hawkins discovered that each level corresponds to specific emotions, perceptions, and behaviors.

Hawkins' main idea is that our level of consciousness determines our reality. He believed that by raising our consciousness, we can experience greater peace, love, and joy.

In his book, he explains that the critical point in the evolution of consciousness is at the 200 level on the Map of Consciousness. This level corresponds to courage. He stated that this is the level at which an individual takes responsibility for their life and begins to rise above victim mentality.

According to Hawkins, every individual has the ability to ascend in the Map of Consciousness.

While David Hawkins doesn’t provide a standard set of questions to help readers pinpoint their exact level, you can use the following questions as a guide.

You can paste the questions and your responses to an AI tool to get an idea of where you stand.

Like so: "Help me understand in what level of consciousness I am in. Based on my responses to these questions referring to the map of consciousness by David R. Hawkins:"

1.Your emotional responses:

  • How often do you feel emotions like guilt, shame, or apathy about events in your life?
  • Would you say that you mostly feel anger, resentment, or pride when things don’t go as planned, or do you lean more toward ?

2. Self-identity:

  • How do you view yourself overall? Do you often see yourself as lacking or not measuring up, or do you feel mostly confident and capable?
  • Do you identify strongly with your successes or failures, or are you able to detach and see them as experiences rather than definitions of who you are?

3. Response to others:

  • When you think about other people’s opinions or actions, are you often defensive or reactive? Or do you feel indifferent to others’ opinions and focus more on your own perspective?
  • How compassionate or judgmental are you toward others’ mistakes or flaws? Are you quick to criticize, or do you approach it with understanding?

4. Sense of purpose:

  • Are you driven by a specific goal that gives you meaning, or do you feel uncertain about your purpose?
  • When motivated, is it mostly to prove something (to yourself or others), or do you feel driven by a desire to contribute or make a difference?

5. Inner peace:

  • Do you frequently experience calmness and peace, or are you more often unsettled, restless, or anxious?
  • When a setback occurs, how quickly do you recover emotionally? Are you able to bounce back quickly, or do you tend to dwell on it for a long time?

6. Level of awareness:

  • How often do you catch yourself in negative thought patterns and work to shift them?
  • Do you spend more time focused on the past, worrying about the future, or are you mostly present?

7. Approach to growth:

  • When reflecting on personal growth, do you feel pressure to change who you are, or do you feel inspired to grow naturally without judgment?
  • Do you practice self-compassion, or are you often harsh and critical of yourself in the pursuit of growth?

With the help of AI, your responses to these questions will reveal around what levels of consciousness you're currently in. You can also ask it what are some strategies to move forward and help you rise your level of consciousness.

At this point of this newsletter, you are becoming who you’re meant to be in this world. These are huge first steps.

What me and you are not going to do is get to 85 and regret never having the courage to do it.

You can be everything you wish to become and that starts with having a deep understanding of who you are. If you have made this far, I am proud of you. I see you. I'm rooting for you. You're committed to making a change not just for yourself, but to cause an impact in this world.

That concludes today's newsletter.

You will receive Part 2 "Find your unique purpose" next Saturday.

I hope you enjoy diving deeper into who you are. And if you found any value while reading this, please consider sharing this letter with someone you know.
